Crossmark Policy
Journal of Educational Research and Practice (JERP)
Date: November 10, 2025
Version: 1.0
Purpose and scope
This policy explains Journal of Educational Research and Practice (JERP)’s adoption and use of the Crossmark service offered by Crossref to provide an authoritative, machine-readable statement of the current status of published items. It applies to all scholarly outputs formally published by JERP (articles, corrections, retractions, editorial notices, and other formal publication types) and to digital manifestations of those outputs (HTML, PDF, ePub). The presence of the Crossmark button on an item indicates JERP's commitment to maintaining and promptly reporting updates to the item's bibliographic and metadata information.
Policy statement
JERP is committed to preserving the integrity and transparency of the scholarly record. By implementing Crossmark, JERP reaffirms this commitment, ensuring that all updates and changes are promptly and openly reported.
- Display the Crossmark button on all newly published items and, whenever practicable, on back-file items.
- Maintain accurate metadata for every item and promptly register any substantive updates (corrections, expressions of concern, retractions, removals, versioning) with Crossref, ensuring the Crossmark status accurately reflects the item's current official state.
- JERP is committed to providing readers with clear and accessible information about editorial and publication processes. This includes links to formal notices and JERP's update policy, empowering readers with the necessary knowledge.
Definitions
For Crossmark and this policy, JERP recognises the following status categories (non-exhaustive):
- Current / Up to date – the item is the authoritative record with no outstanding editorial updates.
- Corrected / Amended – the item has one or more formal corrections or corrigenda that do not nullify the principal findings but amend the record.
- Expression of concern – a formal notice indicating unresolved serious questions about the integrity of the item.
- Retracted – the item has been formally retracted, and the retraction notice is linked to the original item.
- Removed – The item has been removed, and a public statement explains the removal where permissible.
JERP will adopt the wording and classification conventions recommended by Crossref in order to maintain consistency and interoperability with external systems and services.
Procedures for registering updates and notices
- Editorial actions that may trigger an update (e.g., author-requested corrections, editorial corrections, retraction following investigation) shall be documented in the journal’s internal records and be subject to JERP’s editorial governance and COPE-aligned procedures.
- Where appropriate, JERP will publish a formal notice (corrigendum, erratum, expression of concern, or retraction) as a citable item linked to the original article and carrying its own DOI when Crossref policy or good publishing practice requires.
- Following publication of the formal notice, JERP will deposit or update Crossmark metadata with Crossref immediately (or within the shortest practicable timeframe) so that the Crossmark status and linked notices become visible to readers via the Crossmark button and APIs. Metadata deposits will follow Crossref’s technical guidance for registering updates.
- Where historical items require update, JERP will assess and, when feasible, register Crossmark metadata for retrospective items prioritized by significance and reader impact. Crossmark implementation for backfile content is encouraged but optional; however, items that have been updated must have their metadata registered.
Implementation
- JERP will display the Crossmark button adjacent to the article title and include the button within the PDF footer (or other logical location) for each new item. The official Crossmark script and assets provided by Crossref will be used unaltered except for permitted scaling of size.
- Crossmark will be implemented for HTML and PDF outputs. For other formats (e.g., ePub), JERP will include Crossmark where technical constraints permit.
- Clicking the Crossmark button will display the item's current status and provide links to associated notices (corrections, retractions, etc.), relevant dates (submission, acceptance, publication), and, where appropriate, additional metadata (licenses, peer-review model, handling editor).
Metadata and interoperability
Journal of Educational Research and Practice will:
- Assign and maintain DOIs for primary items and for formal update notices as required;
- Deposit complete and accurate Crossmark metadata into Crossref’s system using the prescribed XML schema or web deposit interface;
- Provide supplementary metadata elements where available (e.g., submission/revision/acceptance dates, peer-review information, funding, and licensing data) to enhance transparency and downstream discoverability.
Governance and responsibility
- The Editor-in-Chief retains ultimate responsibility for decisions to publish corrections, expressions of concern, and retractions, following JERP’s editorial policies and applicable ethical guidelines. Editorial staff are responsible for initiating Crossref metadata updates once a formal notice is published.
- The production/technical team is responsible for implementing the Crossmark button, maintaining the script in article templates and in PDF production pipelines, and ensuring timely deposit of metadata to Crossref.
- Questions about this Crossmark policy or requests for clarification should be sent to: jerp@cesmid.or.id. JERP will respond to enquiries within a reasonable timeframe and will provide public contact details on the policy page.
Limitations and disclaimers
The Crossmark button signals JERP's commitment to provide and maintain status and update metadata. While it does not guarantee the scientific validity of the content itself, readers can be confident in the quality of the published work. They must consult the article and any linked notices for a comprehensive understanding.
Review and revision of this policy
This policy will be reviewed periodically and revised as necessary to reflect changes in Crossref guidance, best practice in scholarly publishing, or JERP’s editorial procedures. The published policy page will include version history and the date of the latest revision.
